Maleny is located behind the Sunshine Coast in the Hinterland. The Hinterland is the area behind the coastline of a base of water. In other words, the inland, or rural area where the green and rolling hills of where the Glasshouse Mountains lie.
These beautiful rolling hills were known as a timber town in the 19th and 20th centuries until dairy and fruit growing took over. Now, today, Maleny has a bit of a hippie culture, where artists of all kinds live within the demographic area. Musicians and craftsmen contrast with some of the older residents of the area who are more traditional in nature. Watching Maleny from afar is like looking at a painting of different cultures, filled with vibrant artists and others, this place is like heaven on earth.
While visiting Maleny, there is always something interesting to do. The Woodford Folk Festival is popular and every weekend there seems to be something going on to bring people to the Hinterland. But it really is the natural beauty of Maleny that will catch your breath as you walk along the winding creek, or visit the farms amongst the rolling hills. Along the Blackall Range, there are several lookouts where you can catch a glimpse of the Glasshouse Mountains.
The conservation park is where you will see the beauty of this area. Inside the park, there is an amazing subtropical rainforest with natural flora and fauna. Spending a day picnicking in this gorgeous park is one of the highlights of Maleny. Or, if you love the water, canoe at the Baroon Pocket Dam or rope swim at the rockpools near Gardners Falls if you like adventure.
Maleny is not only rolling hills and mountains but this is a town that has dining in so many places. Throughout the heart of town or along the outskirts, there are cafes that meet the tastes of many tourists and locals. If you happen to be in town for the Real Food Festival, this is the time to experience the many tastes from the region.
